In 1971, Dr. Stephen Hochschuler and Dr. Ralph Rashbaum met while stationed in Wichita Falls, Texas, as general medical officers in the United States Air Force. During this time, both men saw a number of their patients suffering from various types of back pain, but all being diagnosed and treated as if they had the same condition. The doctors knew there were specific causes for each type, and so they began targeting symptoms for what had been diagnosed previously. This experience led them to pursue orthopedic residencies once they had completed their military service.
Texas Back Institute (TBI) offers a multidisciplinary approach devoted solely to the care of patients with spinal disorders and trains orthopaedic surgeons and neurosurgeons through our ACGME accredited Spine Surgery Fellowship Program. The Fellowship offers mentorship under our expert team of fellowship-trained spine surgeons, along with conservative care physicians, pain management physicians, and allied health care professionals. Fellows receive broad clinical experience seeing patients with degenerative spinal disorders, pediatric and adult scoliosis, spine trauma and spine tumors. Fellows learn to perform anterior and posterior surgery of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine, including lumbar and cervical arthroplasty, fusions and discectomies and will also gain experience with open and minimally invasive surgery, including percutaneous surgical approaches. Fellows implant a wide variety of internal fixation devices, learn to perform spinal injections, and implant spinal cord stimulators.
Our physicians accept many HMO and PPO insurance plans and Workers’ Compensation. In fact, we accept more than 80 managed care plans. This is in addition to the point-of-service and traditional indemnity insurance we also accept.
While most of our physicians are on many plans, an individual physician may not be on a specific plan. You should always check when making an appointment to ensure your insurance is accepted by the physician you will be seeing.
If you need to see a physical therapist as part of your treatment plan and our therapists are not in your network, please request a list of network therapists from your insurance plan. From that list, we will gladly refer you to a therapist we know. If you must select a therapist outside our offices, we will make sure he or she receives the appropriate information to treat you. If you have any questions, ask our scheduling staff when you call for your appointment.
Once a Texas Back Institute physician determines your treatment plan, the plan will be shared with your primary care physician and the referral will be updated. If you are covered by Workers’ Compensation, we will coordinate your coverage with your case manager or representative.
UPDATE (OCTOBER 1, 2011): Effective October 1, 2011, UnitedHealthcare updated its Medical Policy as follows: “Cervical artificial total disc replacement is proven for the treatment of single level degenerative disc disease in skeletally mature patients when used with FDA approved implants.” If you have healthcare coverage provided by UnitedHealthcare, consult with your benefits administrator and refer to your benefits plan to determine if you may be qualified for benefits.
